Manuka Honey and Acne

Did you know that one of the many skin ailments that manuka honey is researched to help with is acne? Millions of people suffer from acne, whether it may be caused by hormones, or oily skin clogging pores with bacteria.

Manuka honey uniquely contains various potent natural compounds that can deliver powerful results for various skin and gut issues. Among them are Methylglyoxal (MGO) and Leptosperin.

Various research has found that manuka's MGO is powerful enough to kill a large plethora of both gram negative and gram positive bacterium (even MRSA - we have a post just for that), with most effectiveness against gram positive bacteria. The most common cause of acne due to bacteria build up in pores is Propionibacterium, which is gram positive.

The Leptosperin in Manuka acts as a powerful anti-inflammatory which helps reduce redness and inflammation in a breakout. This paired with the extreme abundance of minerals and flavonoids creates a powerful effect on acne, and a strong prevention of acne scars forming to bring on and maintain healthy and beautiful skin.

Manuka honey also acts as a great natural exfoliator. Using a manuka mask will not only kill bacteria on the skin, it will unclog pores filled with oil and bacteria allowing for healing to begin.

On top of being a powerful antibiotic and anti-inflammatory, Manuka has been proven to also be a powerful natural moisturizer. It is actually very uncommon for a potent topical antibiotic as strong as Manuka honey to not cause dryness or irritation, let alone also moisturize the skin. One of the key secrets to maintaining healthy skin is keeping it properly moisturized. It truly is a one stop shop for skin care.

One of the many great things about manuka honey is that even though it is very powerful alone, it can be used with other oils to create extremely effective skin masks tailored perfectly to the individual. One of our favorite blends is Clary Sage Oil, Tea Tree Oil, and 850MGO Manuka honey. This used as a mask and left on has generated wonderous results for many individuals with acne.

It is important to note that everyone is different, and it is always good to talk to your doctor when wanting to explore remedies. This is not medical advice.
